Cholesterol (Lipid) Panel

Our lipid tests typically combines several components of the overall cholesterol profile. Whenever a cholesterol test is done, there are many factors to consider for an individualized interpretation.
Total cholesterol

A measure of the total amount of cholesterol in your blood.Reflects all portions of the profile added together. Not all cholesterol is bad so we must consider further.

HDL

Is made by your body, is not affected by diet, and represents “good” cholesterol levels. Higher is generally better for this form of cholesterol.

Triglycerides

Are a component of cholesterol involved in blood sugar and fat storage in the liver. Diet, exercise, and genetics have a major impact on these levels.

LDL

Reflects “bad” cholesterol levels, although typically for any LDL under 190, no medication is needed unless you have other cardiovascular risk factors.

Healthy Lifestyle Recommendations

If you're taking medication to manage your cholesterol and your levels are abnormal, we'd recommend the same lifestyle recommendations below. Continue with your current regimen, unless your provider reaches out to tell you otherwise.
  • Try a Mediterranean diet with a heavy focus on fiber (vegetables, whole grains, legumes) and cooking with olive oil.
  • Eat healthy fats like olive oil, fatty fish, avocado, nuts, seeds, and grass-fed meat and dairy. Avoid hydrogenated trans fat.
  • While exercise recommendations change often, One Medical suggests aiming for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five times a week.
  • Make natural or minimally processed foods the basis of your diet.
  • Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables at every meal.
  • Treat any food as dessert if it includes any form of sugar in the first few ingredients (this includes sugar, high fructose corn syrup, organic evaporated cane juice, agave nectar, and honey).
  • Eliminate tobacco use.
